Another cable theft incident in Hawston

Another incident of cable theft was reported today on Eskom’s Maple Feeder near the new storage facility outside Hawston.

Overstrand Executive Mayor, Alderman Archie Klaas, said: “The ongoing theft and vandalism of electrical infrastructure in Hawston are seriously affecting residents, taxpayers, the municipality and other stakeholders.

Last month’s repeated theft of overhead electrical connections in Chapel Street caused frequent power outages, service disruptions and growing frustration within the community. We are now also seeing incidents affecting the area around the new storage facilities and Eskom direct customers.

Although repairs are continually carried out, the problem persists due to ongoing criminal activity and a lack of community involvement in reporting suspicious behaviour.

Every incident of cable theft diverts resources away from service delivery, increases costs for taxpayers and places critical infrastructure at risk.

We urge residents to work with Eskom, the police and law enforcement by reporting suspicious activity immediately.

THE LAW IS CLEAR
Anyone who damages infrastructure, steals cables, makes illegal connections, or tampers with electrical equipment, can face criminal prosecution.

Penalties may include:
* Up to 10 years’ imprisonment
* Heavy fines
* Liability for damages

Please stop the cable theft. Every rand stolen, is money taken from the community
